Certainly the concept of Giving Back to the community is not limited to REBSEA members, but many real estate agents and businesses are not sure of the best way to get started in doing so or letting their community know that they are part of this growing 'movement'. One of the newest members of REBSEA is Realtor Jason Sanko of North Carolina. Below, Jason shares the story of why he decided to join REBSEA in addition to other membership organizations such as Homes for Heroes. Please read his tale of the “Big Why” below:
“Let me start by saying I’m privileged to be a part of such a fine organization. REBSEA embodies precisely the ideals that I adopted early on in my life. For as long as I can remember, I always wanted to Give Back. As a young child I remember my mother exiting onto a Brooklyn, NY street. At the first light several men came out and started washing our windshield. Our window was clean and my mother attempted to politely decline the service but to no avail. Like most other cars, she drove off when the light turned green. This was not acceptable to her 4 year old son (me). I made my mother turn around and pay the gentleman $5.00 for their work. :0)
I’ve noticed that in spite of their best efforts, and with varying circumstances, many people in this world are less fortunate than others. As an adult I take particular interest in children in need. It breaks my heart to witness innocent children suffering, knowing that we can all do our part to help ease their pain and eliminate their crisis.
When I created the Dwell Realty Group in the greater Raleigh (Triangle) area, I believed its purpose should be greater than just the business of real estate. In fact, I believe Dwell is a business within real estate that provides a vehicle, a platform, to help others, above and beyond our own clients.
Several years ago I was asked to define my “BIG WHY”. The one thing that drives me to give it 'all I’ve got', every day. Most would point towards their families and for good reason. In my opinion “family” should be assumed like the vowels they now include in Wheel of Fortune. ;0) For me my family will always be my greatest love; but how do we best care for them? Personally it’s by doing what I’m passionate about. To not focus on the paycheck but the cause. Standing on line in Starbucks I overheard two young gentlemen, sharply dressed in suites discussing their dream jobs. One asked the other what job that would be, to which he replied “wherever I can make the most money”. Both turned back to me as if inviting me into their conversation. The first thing that came to my mind was “perhaps you should work at the U.S. Mint”. Ironically, if you love what you do, the money follows only because you focused on your craft. My BIG WHY (other than my family) is to become profoundly good at what I do professionally so I can help as many less fortunate children as possible.
REBSEA provides me the ideal model to deliver my BIG WHY. I get to visit numerous non-profit organizations (NPO’s) and invite them to join REBSEA for free. Additionally we have mutually beneficial reasons to promote and support one another. Sure, I ask those NPO’s I approach to recommend me as their Realtor partner of choice and in return all business I procure directly and positively impacts those NPO’s. Dwell gives 10% of our net income back to various philanthropic causes. The more business we do, the more people we help.
There’s nothing more fulfilling than helping others in need. For me, it’s in my DNA… For those reading this and are in a business that could incorporate REBSEA into their philanthropic strategy, I strongly encourage you to do so. In the end you have all the good intentions…let REBSEA provide you with the tools to most effectively deliver.”
